This is used as the material component for the Well of Corruption spell, which cannot be cast unless this component is carried by the caster.

This component is consumed by casting the Well of Corruption spell.

Two ounces of shadow essence can be extracted from a dead shadow with a DC 12 arcana check using alchemy tools. On a failure, one ounce is extracted.

A shadow essence can be used with calligraphy tools as an ink to write low-level magic scrolls.
