You take a small amount of fire, air, water, or earth, using it as a focus to call an elemental spirit, which then dramatically appears before you.

Summoning
You conjure one elemental of challenge rating 4 or lower.*
The elemental is friendly to you and your companions and follows your instructions.
The elemental acts after your turn in initiative.
If you don't issue any commands, the elemental only defends itself from attackers and otherwise does nothing.
When the spell ends, the elemental doesn't disappear. Instead, it gains free will, often in a way that makes it hostile to its summoner.
*Upcasting: The challenge rating of the summoned creature increases by 1 for every spell level above 4th.
